| A couple of weekends ago was my 26th birthday. OH MY...surpassing the quarter-life period! I really didn't want to spend it all by myself in my small little dorm room, so I took a trip up to Boston to visit Laura and Geoff. I went to BAAASTON all by myself on the lovely Greyhound bus. Actually, the bus wasn't that lovely, and it took a lot longer than expected to arrive. GRR.

The blue blue Boston sky!
Laura and Geoff took me to Salem. That's right! The witch history city! Learned lots of disturbing things about that time period and how crazy and nonsensical people's mindsets were.

I'm sure Halloween would be really fun here. The decorations were gorgeous. Look at the lovey dovey couple!
After dinner, we dropped by my most favorite, most longing for dessert place: Finale! The last time I was here was like 4 years ago with Laura, Leslie and Pannyun! I couldn't forget their SUPER YUMMY creme brulee. Yay!! I met Laura and Geoff's kittens: Albus and Tonks. They liked me immediately and purred as they rubbed my leg. I enjoyed watching Tonks do her Michael Jordan jump and Albus poking his head in and out of plastic bags...
FUN weekend, only to go back to NYC with tons of homework.

The trees are lovely here. I can't wait till the leaves change color. DIGI time!!

Recently, some dormmates and I started to have gatherings every other week. They are all from different countries, except the guy on the left who is actually from the Bay Area! He's my neighbor. They're a fun group of people and I've been bonding with them over chips and sweets.
This past weekend, I had kbbq and karaoke with some of them. Ok, once again, THE WORLD IS SMALL. Su(the girl wearing the white tank top)'s bf flew out from Irvine. We were talking and then found out that we went to UCI at the same time. Not only that, but we both lived in Middle Earth...AND, he lived in Grey Havens!! RIGHT ABOVE ME! I thought he looked kind of familiar, but when we figured that out, omg....we couldn't believe the chances. We didn't meet till 8 years later! haha...Anyway, kbbq was quite pricey...and karaoke, OMG, $50 for an hour!!! Oh well, as long as it was fun...and this karaoke place didn't have the cheesy music videos. We watched some random clips of korean dramas as we sang songs. | | |
| I've been here for almost a month now! While sinking my head in books, I've also managed to have some fun...

Sonny and I have been exploring various parts of Manhattan on the weekend. Shots taken from Central Park and Union Theological Seminary.

Seeing Sharon for the first time since Japan!! She flew over for less than 24 hours and I got to catch up with her over desserts. Oh how I miss Japan life!

Stacy and Norm came out for a lil less than a week!! What did we do? EAT OF COURSE! (L) Sarabeth for breakfast. Chicken Apple sausage! (R) Sherry's favorite: Rice to Riches. Yummy Rice Pudding. I personally find this more interesting than Pinkberry...hehehe.
Cuban food. The only cuban food I've ever had was Chicken and that banana thing at Versailles, but this place was more unique...

Cupcakes at Crumbs. Much more worth it than Kara's small teeny weentsy cupcakes.

Pizza at my favorite place!

Most of the time, Norm was working, so me and Stace went and did some site seeing and great UNIQLO shopping. That's right. UNIQLO, how I love thee.

Stace was the first guest to come to Columbia and visit my dorm room! (R) Here she is, thinking and going to the bathroom.

(L) Eating a sour plum. (M) Norm waiting for us. (R) Stacy wanted to bring this back to Fremont.

(L) I love my dorm room, but the worst part is the shower, and this is why. All the water gushes out and spreads over the bathroom floor. (R) Paris Hilton's dog's favorite store.
All the fun done with, the homework and reading is starting to pile up. I signed up for a Japanese course as well. The sad thing is that when I'm sick and tired of doing my real hw and reading, I turn to my Japanese hw for relaxation. Thanks for the your advice Salinny!! Since coming here, I have been speaking Japanese way more than Cantonese. Last week, Lian invited me to her Mooncake Festival Fellowship party and I was finally able to use my Cantonese. YAY! And I ate Wing Wah Mooncake!
I miss Chinese food so much...the other day, my friend Katie, took me to Chinatown to eat cheap BBQ pork rice, dan tat, and gok cha sui bao. If it didn't take 45 mintues by subway to go there, I'd be there everyday instead of cooking!
Star sightings: NONE. My Japanese teacher told our class that he saw Brad Pitt at a park very near our school filming a movie. BRAD PITT!!! and I MISSED IT! Katie told me she saw CSI:NY filming in Central Park.
My search for a church and fellowship is still in progress. This past Sunday, I went to Redeemer and heard a great sermon. One thing that really stuck out was hearing that many legends and myths of the great people of the past have all gone to great lengths (crossing oceans, fighting in intense battles) to prove their strength, power and worth, but Jesus did the exact opposite. He sunk to the very bottom to show us how much He loved us. It made me think about why the society (me included) tended to admire the people who were strong and powerful.
Until next time...! | | |
| After being MIA from xanga for a LOOOONG time, here I am again...WITH pictures! I am at my new home:New York City! Here's my lovely dorm. It's a single, and it comes with many luxuries...especially my OWN bathroom!

I had my first visitors!! Tihua and Caleb came out for the weekend and we had lots of fun walking through Soho and Little Italy!
Nice to know that art is not lacking in this city!

Indeed, there is sunshine!
I got all the classes I wanted and already went to my first class! English Grammar. Imagine this...I have to learn how to define a noun, verb, and so on...and you think it's easy: a noun is a person place or thing. a verb is an action. nope! much more complicated than that! The challenge of learning linguistic lingo is actually kind of fun. AND, the group discussions in class make it even more interesting. Everyone is willing to talk and express their ideas.
It's hard to find friends. I mean...I am meeting a lot of people, and they are really great...diversity is amazing in this school...but it's gonna take a lot more work to find people that I can connect with. I've already signed up for some clubs, including (not a surprise) the Japanese club, and IV fellowship. I figure that the best way to meet people who have similar interests is to find groups that are of interest to me!
So basically, I am learning initiative. I think Japan prepped me well for it. Now, my skills can be put into this enormous city.
ALSO, food is amazing here. I think I have tried the best pizza that there is in NYC...and I'm sorry to say to those people who absolutely love Chicago style... NYC style is wayyyyyyyy better.
Fun Fact: What does SoHo stand for? South of Houston! There is a street called Houston, so the area below it would be SoHo. AND, how do you pronounce Houston? It's not the same as the city in Texas...you actually prounounce it HOW-ston. Next time you come to NYC, you'll know! =)
Tata for now!! Thanks Shannaynay for my first letter!
